Empathy is a piece for stereo fixed media. Premiering at the Milwaukee Composer's Collective Concert in 2019, this "avant-garde" work is based on a letter Peter received from President Barack Obama discussing the need for empathy in the world.
"I believe we don't have enough empathy in our world today, and it is up to your generation to change that."
This message inspired Peter to create this work.
This piece uses the voice of the artist Mie. After recording Mie read the letter, Peter took snippets of breaths, tongue clicks, and phrases of the letter, which allowed him to create a texture of a-rhythmic, and rhythmic material. The full message of the piece is not present until roughly halfway through the composition, allowing the through-composed piece to "build-up."
